Position Paper #1 Internet Innovators

3 Internet Innovators That Are Shaping The Future

Many startup and traditional companies have been developing Internet advancements each year. The advancements in the Internet have progressed tremendously over time. The driving forces of the companies shape the future of advancements. The people that build these successful Internet advancements are the innovators. Innovators are behind the scenes and sometimes the face of these companies. The people that have made various apps or platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat paved the way for various innovators to dream big and execute well. They laid the groundwork as to what is to come of the future. The future is bright with the success of these Internet advancements and the sky's the limit. Many of whom did not understand what an innovator is, so I define what it is. An innovator is someone who has embraced this idea and creates environments in which employees are given the tools and resources to challenge the status quo, push boundaries and achieve growth (Innovator Definition). Now that we know what an innovator represents, let's dive into the 3 innovators that are developing fresh Internet advancements. The first Internet innovator will be discussing is Joe Hollier.

Joe Hollier is the Cofounder of Light. Light is a low-maintenance phone that caters to your basic needs. The Light Phone creates a space for its users to tap back into days where smartphones didn't exist. Light was founded by Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang, an artist and product designer who met in a Google experimental program in 2014. They were encouraged to make smartphone apps and taught on a deeper level how and why different products were being built and funded. It became obvious that the last thing the world needed was another smartphone app fighting for our attention (https://www.thelightphone.com/about-us).

Hollier along with his business partner Tang have created a very unique product that no one has seen done. Nobody would ever think to reverse the fundamentals of a smartphone  back to basic functioning phone. Joe Hollier was featured in Forbes 30 under 30 for this new innovation. The Light Phone was launched in 2017 and since has created Light Phone 2. Light Phone 2 is launched in 2018. It's a more reliable and practical phone than its predecessor. The Light Phone 2 can actually replace your smartphone for good by bringing a few essentials like messaging, an alarm clock, and a roadmap of future tools that will make it even easier to avoid reaching back for your smartphone. We created a custom ‘light’ operating system using a black and white matte e-ink display (https://www.thelightphone.com/about-us). Hollier has acquired huge attraction with this new concept of a phone. This phone blends past and future into one. Its simplicity also attracted over 8.4 million in venture funding from Foxconn and others (https://www.forbes.com/30-under-30/2020/consumer-technology/#1a8f36673a24). I think a phone like this is super beneficial to those not obsessed with social media and for older adults. Most older adults do not know how to work a high-tech smartphone and it is a struggle to keep up with society as far as phones go. This is a great opportunity for older adults to communicate with everyone and not feel left behind with new gadgets.

The next innovator that shapes future Internet advancements is Seyi Akiwowo. Seyi Akiwowo is a British-Nigerian women's rights activist and campaigner. She is the founder and director of Glitch, a non-profit campaigning to end online abuse. Akiwowo was selected as the Amnesty International Human Rights Defender in 2018 and the Digital Leader of the Year in 2019 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seyi_Akiwowo). Seyi Akiwowo started a platform called Glitch. Glitch's purpose is dedicated to ending online abuse against women. Glitch! trains young people on how to be good digital citizens and provides support to women in public life about digital self care (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/change-everything-smart-list-2021).

Glitch was created so that young women can share the experiences of online attack and feel comfortable in a space to voice their opinions. Akiwowo wanted to protect those who didn't have enough support to protect themselves. Glitch is an Internet advancement that has built for online abuse to cease. It allows young people to be protected from malicious trolls and those who have suffered harassment on social media. Seyi is an amazing and inspirational woman who is holding big tech companies to account and influencing their practices (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/change-everything-smart-list-2021).

Last innovator on the agenda is Devon Townsend. Devon Townsend created a cool innovative app that  everyone would be excited to know about. Townsend is the cofounder of Cameo. Cameo is an online service that lets people hire celebrities to create personalized videos. Some have not heard of Cameo and are surprised with this app's finding. Thousands of actors, musicians, artists, and influencers have joined the platform and set their own rates for a Cameo video appearance (Business Insider).

The thing that is so cool and unique about this app is that it allows your favorite celebrities to send a video message directed towards you and make you feel special. With this app there is a catch. Celebrity requests made on Cameo are guaranteed within seven days or all money is refunded — but the talent always has the final say on whether or not they complete a request. Cameo video prices range from as low as $1 to as high as $2,500, depending on the celebrity (Business Insider). The app delivers an exciting and star-struck experience for those who really adored celebrities. This not only makes the fan feel great but also gives the celebrity a chance to interact sincerely towards their supporters. What is most interesting about Cameo is that the innovator is a former Vine star. Overall, these innovators have come up with some insanely creative ways to push Internet advancements along. These innovators really tap into what their customers would like to see and provide them with their wants and needs.
